Key concepts include Precolonial preindustrial differences have striking predictive power for the pattern of both per capita incomes and technology adoption across nations that can be observed today. Technology is very persistent both within countries and sectors. Adoption dynamics vis à vis country specific factors such as institutions geography or genes appear to be the mechanism behind such persistence.
Author Abstract We assemble a dataset on technology adoption in B.C. A.D. and A.D. for the predecessors to today s nation states. We find that this very old history of technology adoption is surprisingly significant for today s national development outcomes. Our strong and robust results are for A.D. determining per Brazil Phone Number List capita income today. We find technological persistence across long epochs from B.C. to A.D. from A.D. to A.D. and from A.D. to the present. suggestive tests of rival hypotheses to explain long run technological persistence we find the evidence to be most consistent with a model of endogenous technology adoption where the cost of adopting new technologies declines sufficiently with the current level of adoption.
The evidence is less consistent with a dominant role for population as predicted by the semi endogenous growth models or for country level factors like culture genes or institutions. Paper Information Full Working Paper Text pdf Applicant and Examiner Citations in U.S. Patents An Overview and Analysis by Juan Alcacer The ready availability of patent citation data has been a tremendous boon to applied research on knowledge and innovation. The role of examiners in the generation of patent citations has been thought to potentially complicate these analyses but has been difficult to study.
